Australians Gather for Presidential Visit

Canberra — 6 June 2003

MSPA 137/03

About 40 members of the Australian Defence Force have formally participated in the President of the United States&rsqyuo; official visit to Qatar, in the Middle East.

The Australian contingent of staff drawn from the Australian National Headquarters and personnel from the Australian C130 and Combined Air Operations Centre detachments were asked to participate in a gathering of Coalition partners where the efforts of their countries have been recognised by the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

The Australian National Headquarters-Middle Area of Operations has worked closely with Central Command (CENTCOM) since Australian forces arrived in the region in February.

Australian National Commander Air Commodore Graham Bentley said the arrival of President Bush was recognition of the efforts of the members of CENTCOM and the Coalition partners.

"Australians have continued to enhance their reputation with their Coalition colleagues as professionals. In my time here in the Middle East, the Australian contingent has impressed me as being dedicated and focused on doing their job well," AIRCDRE Bentley said.

AIRCDRE Bentley said the inclusion of Australian and British personnel in the official ceremony and speeches was recognition for those countries which have provided support to the United States in operations in Iraq.
